This is the time to think about funding for the main EBMT 2012 as well as other travel opportunities for next year. We have established 3 types of travel grants for our members:
• Exchange Visit Scholarship
• Educational Travel Scholarship
• EBMT Conference Travel Scholarship
Exchange Visits
This is an opportunity for 2 members to carry out an exchange between 2 centres in different UK cities. The visit will focus on a specific area of care for patients undergoing stem cell transplantation (SCT) and help to improve communication and collaboration between UK centres. There are 2 grants available each year, each to the value of a £500 (maximum). The grants are given away only in pairs, meaning that an interested person/centre should collaborate with a nurse/allied health professional from another centre. These 2 colleagues should apply together for the scholarship. If a person cannot find an interested colleague then we can help to find a centre interested in the exchange programme. In order to qualify for one of these grants, applicants must:
- Be a nurse/allied health professional actively involved in SCT/haematology care
- Be a member of the EBMT (UK) NAP group and working in the UK
- Provide a biographical data sheet
- Give a brief description (max. 250 words) of their goals regarding the visit with specific areas of interest
- Provide a letter of approval from their work centre which must accompany the application
- Use the money for travel and accommodation only. The applicant must cover any costs exceeding the £500 provided.
- Share the experience within the EBMT (UK) NAP group as an oral presentation at an EBMT (UK) NAP group meeting
- Share the experience as an article in the latest news section of the website
The first half of the money will be given to the recipients after receiving the collaborative abstract ; the second half will be given after receiving the article for the latest news section written by at least both parties who received the scholarship.
Applications should be submitted to Lisa Hammond, secretary of the EBMT (UK) NAP before 31st December of each year (Contact through the website).
Educational Travel
This scholarship is awarded once a year and is to the value of £500. To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must:

- Aim to improve clinical practice within their own unit as a direct result of the visit
The first half of the money will be given to the recipients after receiving the collaborative abstract for the meeting; the second half will be given after receiving the article for the latest news section written by at least both parties who received the scholarship.
Applications should be submitted to Lisa Hammond, secretary of the EBMT (UK) NAP before 31st December of each year (Contact through the website).
EBMT Conference Travel

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of you who have received an invitation to present either an oral or a poster presentation in Geneva April 2012. The Scientific Committee (pictured) shifted through well over 100 abstracts from all over Europe but also as far as Australia and the US to put together an interesting and exciting programme for EBMT 2012.
If you are now starting to plan your trip and are looking for funding, have a look at details on both on travel & educational scholarships on both the main EBMT website (www.ebmt.org) and on the UK NAP site (www.ebmt.co.uk). Deadlines for scholarships are found on the sites.

In writing a summary of how the educational scholarship awarded by the European Group for Blood and Bone Marrow Transplantation (UK) Nurses and Allied Health Professionals (EBMT (UK) NAP) has been of great benefit I am returning to my original application to review the goals and areas of specific interest, which I identified at the time.
I had an opportunity to embark on a research project and was keen to explore an area of patient experience of haematopoietic transplantation. Therefore, to attend this specialist conference was a chance to network with clinical staff and to find out more about the current topical areas of research and development across Europe.
I have worked in oncology and haematology for the past six years and been constantly in awe of the ways in which patients cope with aggressive chemotherapy regimes, radiation and long periods of time in hospital often in isolation. Short and longer term side effects of treatments have an on-going effect on patients’ experiences and quality of life, not least the physically and emotionally draining effects of graft versus host disease (GVHD).
One of the clinical developments which came about as a direct result of the BMT team attending the Paris conference has been the introduction of extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) as a treatment for the acute phase of GVHD. Currently, patients with chronic GVHD have been treated in our dermatology department situated in a different hospital to that where stem cell transplants take place (though part of the same Trust). As ECP was being considered as an earlier intervention than previously, it became an increased risk for acutely unwell patients to transfer and receive therapy in an ambulatory setting. I admit to being somewhat nervous by the rapid introduction of a procedure taking us into unchartered territory in terms of knowledge and expertise, with limited evidence as to its efficacy. Within a relatively short space of time and gargantuan team effort, standard operating procedures were written, training programmes developed and ECP became a reality for a number of patients with steroid refractory/ dependent aGVHD both in the haematology ward and day unit setting. Doubtless, the clinical outcomes will be reported at a future meeting.
A specific interest of mine is the quality of life for patients surviving acute life threatening illness, the longer term physical, psychological and psychosocial effects and their future health needs as well as the contribution nurses can make to actively support patients through the diagnostic, treatment and survival phases. Therefore, presentations from nurses including topics such as high risk transplantation, ethical considerations, palliative care, supportive and ambulatory care and survivorship were all highly relevant. Similarly, the conference presented many opportunities to visit commercial stands and to hear about novel therapies and products to treat conditions such as mucositis and poor nutritional status.
Not least were the networking opportunities afforded on this visit, both professionally and socially. It was a great opportunity to meet up with new and established colleagues on the London circuit and beyond! It was inspiring to learn of the work of the EBMT committee in terms of supporting education and research for nurses and developing innovative ways to support patients and their families.
In times when it can be difficult to secure funding to attend conferences, it is very helpful to be able to seek help from a number of different sources and amazing how quickly numerous channels of support make it possible.
All told, I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have been awarded this scholarship and feel it has been the springboard to instigate a piece of patient centred research which I hope to share in the future.

We’re delighted to welcome Marie Waller as a new member to our committee. A call for applications was made in March 2011 and the elections took place at our 40th Educational Meeting in London on 30 June 2011.
Marie has been working in Haematology and Stem Cell Transplant for 11 years. She has worked at the Manchester Royal Infirmary in her current role as transplant coordinator for nearly 5 of these. The Manchester Royal Infirmary undertake around 90+ transplants a year (Mud, sibling, cord and auto) and are involved in numerous transplant related clinical trials. She has also worked at the Christie.
She has attended the EBMT conference several times submitting work as poster and oral presentations. Of note is the Myeloma Patient Pathway she developed with a colleague.
Locally, she has set up a weekly education programme, is a member of the North West Haematology Clinical Nurse Specialist Group (NWHNG) and earlier this year arranged a transplant nurses’ conference which was attended by 120 delegates from all over the UK.
The department she works in has recently undertaken their JACIE inspection and she is an active member of the JACIE and quality team.
We look forward to working with her and adding her valuable skills to our committee.
Congratulations Marie!

Welcome to this edition of Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant News. Many of you will have heard about the impending changes in the structure of the RCN's forums, so I thought it would be helpful to bring you up to speed about what that means for our forum.
From 1 October, we will be merging with three other RCN forums - Blood Transfusion, Haemophilia and Intravenous Nursing - after which we will become know as the RCN Haematology and Intravenous Therapy Forum. But you'll be pleased to know that our current activities will continue, ensuring that haematology nursing issues are supported and developed.
Clearly this merger has a number of effects. Firstly, this will be the last edition of the newsletter. I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all of you who have supported the forum with your ideas for articles, attending conferences, the study days we have organised over the years, and for your time and interest in all our activities.
In particular, thank you for putting yourselves forward to be on our review panel to comment on the haematology competency framework. For a number of reasons, this last activity has been rather protracted, but work is still continuing. Those of you who have already expressed an interest will be receiving the draft by December. If others would like to join that review panel, please do get in touch - the more, the better. You can contact me at: marvelle.brown@tvu.ac.uk This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
Another effect of the merger is a change in the membership of the new forum. Gordon McGhee, a long-standing member of our steering committee, will be stepping down. Gordon has been a fantastic support, both to myself, and the forum as a whole. Nothing is too much for him to do. He is always willing to offer support, encouragement and share his expert advice - plus everything is done with a smile. Both personally and on behalf of the forum, I would like to thank Gordon for all his time and hard work. But Gordon will continue to be a member of the working group for the haematology competences and be involved in other activities, which is great news.
The final note of change is that all forum newsletters in the future will be online. While personally I think this is a loss, it is about rationalising resources and may increase readership.
I hope you enjoy the articles in this edition. As this is my last one as editor, I'd like to say a big thank you for your support and wish you all the best with your professional aspirations for the future. |
