The EBMT (UK) NAP Group stands for the European Bone Marrow Transplant (United Kingdom) Nurses and Allied Professions Group. Now you can understand why we have an abbreviation!
Twenty five years ago, in 1984, the first meeting of the EBMT Nurses Group (EBMT-NG) was held in Bad Hofgastein, Austria. This meeting ran in parallel to the physicians’ meeting and had an aim to provide a platform for nurse education and sharing experiences within the field of bone marrow transplant (BMT). At this time, BMT was very much an experimental treatment and very few hospitals offered it. It was therefore important for nurses throughout Europe to have an annual meeting to share their knowledge.
It then became apparent that to help with communication in each European country performing BMT there should be a nominated “contact person” in each country. This contact person would be able to disseminate information sent from the EBMT-NG committee to national colleagues in their own language, between conferences.
At the same time, in the United Kingdom, there was another BMT forum being set up under the umbrella of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN). This group had the same objectives. The RCN forum agreed there should be a link between the two groups. Further information about recent developments in the RCN BMT forum is available in under ‘latest news’.
As the EBMT-NG became successful at organising their annual conferences, it was important that the links with the European countries became stronger. The Netherlands and United Kingdom were the first two countries to take this forward by forming national groups that were affiliated to the EBMT-NG. The UK group wanted to provide 3 educational meetings per year, make the meetings affordable for all grades of nurses and to include allied professionals that were working within the BMT team. A committee was formed, sponsorship was obtained from six companies and the first meeting was held in Birmingham in 1997.
From that first meeting it was agreed that the group would hold 3 educational meetings per year and for a trial period each meeting would include working parties on the following topics to see if national guidelines could be formulated.
- Central line access
- Isolation issues
- Day case Management
- BMT Coordination
- Symptom control
- Staff recruitment
Over the past 36 meetings the committee have been able to provide:
- Their commitment to provide regular educational meetings at affordable cost to the participants.
- Travel scholarships
- A national directory of BMT units to include contact details of staff to be used as a resource
- Improved communications with the invention of the world wide web
- Solutions to improve sibling donor care follow up
- Joint meetings with the National Quality Managers Forum to promote the accreditation system known as JACIE
- A patient and carers day in line with the main EBMT annual conference

Blood and marrow transplant (BMT) nursing is at a very exciting evolutionary stage. Over the last two decades, with the support of medical colleagues, BMT nursing has grown rapidly and has acknowledged the care needs of the patients, their families and donors. Advanced Practice Nurses have been taking a leading role in the care of patients, providing in holistic care; BMT nurses are involved in the decision-making process about treatment options for their patients, and they evidently contribute to an enhancement in their patients' quality of life. More and more, BMT nurses are conducting research on topics based on clinical practice, and are formulating their own research agenda. Forums for exchanging knowledge and experience are increasingly needed.

EBMT (UK) NAP is part of the wider EBMT group.
The EBMT Nurses Group started in January 1985 with encouragement and support from physicians working in the transplantation area. At present, a 3-day nursing conference is held in conjunction with the medical group, offering many concurrent abstracts and instructional sessions, as well as joint sessions with other disciplines involved in the care of the BMT patient. The annual conferences provide a forum for communication and discussion on a broad range of topics relevant to BMT-nursing. The conferences are giving nurses, doctors and others opportunities to share information about new developments in treatment modalities.
In March 2005 a Pre-Meeting Study Day was held prior to the main Congress, aimed at enabling those attending to develop their expertise in caring for patients undergoing transplantation. The Study Day was evaluated as being a great sucess and is now a regular feature of the Nurses Group Scientific Programme at EBMT Meetings.
Currently the Nurses Group has over 500 members, from 50 different countries throughout Europe and a few members in Australia, Asia and North America.
The main EBMT nurses group is open to all healthcare professionals involved in the care of stem cell transplant patients. Please click here to visit the main site and register for this European meeting. It is also important to know that any centre registered with main EBMT is entitled to send one nurse from the unit to the annual meeting free of charge.
